Zebra printer offline on a Mac

Check the printer light first. If it is red or flashing, the printer is stopped, so the Mac queue says offline. If the light is green, resume the queue, clear a stuck job, or add the printer again with the ZPL or EPL2 driver that matches the sticker.

"Offline" on a Mac is often the printer's own fault light, or a paused queue. Work through Apple's list in this order.

Most likely causes#

  1. The printer is paused or in an error. A red or flashing light makes the queue look stopped.
  2. The queue is paused in Print Center, or one job is stuck in front.
  3. The driver language is wrong. ZPL, EPL2, and a generic driver are not the same. An LP2844 is EPL only.
  4. The cable, hub, or adapter is bad, so the Mac does not list the printer under System Information, USB.
  5. The queue is stale after a macOS update. Remove it and add it again. Reset Printing System is the last step, and it deletes every printer.

Fix it#

  1. Look at the printer light. If it is red or flashing, fix that before you change the Mac. Use the red light guide.
  2. Hold Option, open System Information, and click USB. Confirm the Mac sees the printer.
  3. Open Print Center. If the queue is paused, resume it. Delete a job that is stuck.
  4. Remove the printer and add it again. In Select Software, search for zebra. Choose ZPL or EPL2 to match the sticker on the back. If you are unsure and the printer is not an LP2844, Zebra says ZPL is the default.
  5. Open http://localhost:631 for CUPS. If that page is disabled, run cupsctl WebInterface=yes in Terminal. USB printers are usually added for you. A network printer uses AppSocket / HP JetDirect, socket:// plus the IP address. Zebra print servers do not support HTTP or IPP printing.
  6. Last resort: Printers & Scanners, Control-click the printer list, then Reset Printing System. This deletes all printers on the Mac.

For an EPL1 or EPL2 Zebra, try the other driver in Modify Printer when the sticker and the queue do not match.

Connect from Chrome or Edge on the setup page. If the browser sees the printer and the status says "No faults reported", the printer and the cable are fine. The problem is the macOS queue.

Safari cannot talk to a USB printer from this site. The button steps and the CUPS queue still work in Safari.

FAQ

Why is my Zebra printer offline on a Mac?

The printer may be paused or showing a red light, or the Print Center queue is paused. Fix the light first, then resume the queue.

Why is my Zebra not showing up on a Mac?

Hold Option and open System Information, then USB. If the Mac does not list the printer, try another cable or skip the hub. If it is listed, remove the queue and add it again.

Which Mac driver does a ZP450 use?

macOS uses CUPS. Zebra says to pick ZPL if you are unsure. An LP2844 is EPL only. Pirate Ship says to match the ZPL or EPL sticker on the back of the printer.

What does Reset Printing System do?

Apple lists it as the last resort under Printers & Scanners. Control-click the printer list and choose Reset Printing System. It deletes every printer, not only the Zebra.
