Print from a Zebra on a Mac

Symptoms

You want to set up a Zebra printer from a Mac. The system printer queue may already own the USB port, so the browser cannot claim it. A phone on the same desk cannot see the printer at all.

Cause

Chrome and Edge on a Mac can talk to the printer over USB from this site. Safari cannot. If macOS already added the printer under Printers & Scanners, it can hold the port. iPhone and iPad do not offer this USB path.

Fix

  1. Use Chrome or Edge. Open printer setup over HTTPS and connect.
  2. If the claim fails, open System Settings, then Printers & Scanners, and remove the Zebra printer. Unplug the cable, plug it back in, and try again.
  3. Calibrate and set darkness from the same page. You do not need a separate desktop utility for those settings.
  4. A phone still cannot use this USB page. The Bridge puts the printer on your network so you can print from another room. Get the Bridge.

FAQ

Chrome says it cannot claim the printer on my Mac

Remove the printer in System Settings, Printers & Scanners. Unplug the cable, plug it back in, and connect again from this site.

Can I set the printer up from an iPhone?

Safari cannot talk to USB printers. The Bridge puts the printer on your network so a phone on the same Wi-Fi can reach it.
