Zebra printer offline on Windows

Look at the printer light first. If it is red, the printer is stopped, and Windows may show it as offline. If the light is green, open the queue and clear Use Printer Offline, Pause Printing, or a stuck job.

Windows may show the queue as offline when the printer is stopped, and also when the queue itself is set to offline. Check the light so you know which one it is.

Most likely causes#

  1. The printer is in an error. A red light is the printer, not Windows. Start with the red light guide.
  2. Use Printer Offline or Pause Printing is checked, or a job is stuck in the queue.
  3. The USB port changed after you replugged the cable. USB001 and USB002 are different ports. A hub or dock can do the same thing.
  4. The driver does not match the printer. A UPS or FedEx unit uses the carrier driver.

Fix it#

  1. Look at the printer light. If it is red or flashing, fix that before you change Windows.
  2. Unplug the printer for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  3. Open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners. Open the print queue and choose Cancel all.
  4. Restart the Print Spooler service.
  5. Remove the printer and add it again.
  6. Clear Use Printer Offline if it is checked. Clear Pause Printing.
  7. If the USB port changed, for example from USB001 to USB002, plug the cable into the computer and pick the port that just appeared. A hub or dock can do the same thing.
  8. If this is a UPS or FedEx LP2844, install the carrier driver. Zebra KB 000016006 says that printer must not get standard Zebra firmware or drivers. The ZP450 is intended for UPS WorldShip, so use the vendor's labels and driver.

Microsoft's article covers the 30-second unplug, Cancel all, restarting Print Spooler, and adding the printer again. Use Printer Offline and the USB port name are separate checks.

On Windows, the Zebra driver holds the USB device, so Chrome cannot connect to it from this site. The setup page shows that when it happens. The button steps on the red light and calibration pages do not need the browser.

FAQ

Why does my Zebra say offline but it is connected?

Windows may show a stopped printer as offline. If the light is red, fix the printer first. If the light is green, the queue is paused or a job is stuck.

Why did my Zebra go offline after I unplugged it?

The USB port may have changed, for example from USB001 to USB002, or the printer is behind a hub or dock. Plug it into the computer and choose the port that just appeared.

Why is my Zebra not recognized on Windows 11?

Check the cable and the port first. A UPS or FedEx LP2844 must use the carrier driver, not a standard Zebra driver.

Can the browser setup tool see the printer on Windows?

Not while the Zebra driver owns the USB device. The setup page explains that block. Use the queue steps on this page, or the button steps for a red light.
