Zebra printer darkness

Symptoms

Barcodes look pale, or the print blooms and scans fail. Small text fills in. The label is not blank, just too light or too heavy.

Cause

Darkness is the burn level, usually 0 to 30. A relative nudge is not the same as setting an absolute number. Speed and darkness interact, so change one of them at a time.

Fix

  1. Open settings and read the current darkness.
  2. Start near 15 for shipping labels. Raise it when the barcode is pale. Lower it when the image blooms.
  3. Print a hello label and scan it before the next change.
  4. Save after it scans. The set darkness command sets an absolute level. The media darkness command only nudges the current level.

FAQ

What darkness should I use for shipping labels?

Start around 15 on a 0 to 30 scale. Move one or two steps at a time and scan the barcode before you go further.

What is the difference between ^SD and ^MD?

^SD sets an absolute level. ^MD nudges the current level up or down. Two nudges are not the same as setting an absolute number.
