Zebra labels blurry or faded
A fuzzy label from a Mac is often the PDF, not a dead printhead. Print a configuration label or a hello label from the browser. If that one is sharp and the shipping label is fuzzy, the computer is rasterizing the PDF.
Compare two labels before you clean the head. A native test label tells you whether the printer can print a sharp image.
Most likely causes#
- A Mac or a PDF is rasterizing at the wrong DPI. Pirate Ship says Zebra printers may print fuzzy labels from a Mac.
- Darkness is low, or speed is high. The ZP450 guide lists darkness and speed for print that is faded or not right.
- The head is dirty. Light print on one side points to the head or the platen.
- The head or the platen is worn.
- The stock is old or not the stock the printer expects. The ZP450 guide says you must use direct thermal media.
Fix it#
- Print a configuration label, or a hello label from the browser tool. If that label is sharp, the head is fine and the PDF is not.
ZP450
- Hold FEED and release after 6 green flashes. The printer prints darkness barcode patterns.
- Press FEED when the pattern is clear. That stores the darkness you can see.
- You can also set darkness with ~SD and speed with ^PR. Change one of them, print, then change the other.
GK420d
- Hold FEED and release after 6 flashes for the darkness patterns. Press FEED when the pattern is clear.
- If a vertical line is blank, clean the head. The ZP450 guide says a blank vertical line is a dirty or damaged head.
- If the whole label is pale after darkness is raised, the head or platen may be worn, or the stock is old.
Set darkness and speed in the browser, then print the hello label. That label is native ZPL. Put it next to the PDF label. The sharp one is the path to keep.
The darkness page covers ~SD and ^MD. A 203 dpi design that prints small or soft on a 300 dpi head is the wrong size page.
FAQ
Why are my Zebra labels blurry?
Pirate Ship says a Zebra on a Mac may print fuzzy labels. Print a configuration label. If that one is sharp, the PDF or the Mac driver is the cause.
Why is my Zebra printing too light?
Raise darkness from the middle of the 0 to 30 scale, or run the 6-flash darkness pattern on a ZP450 or GK420d.
Why is the print light on one side?
The ZP450 guide points to a dirty or damaged head, or a damaged platen, for print that fails on part of the label.
Why is the barcode fuzzy but a test label is sharp?
The head can print. The shipping PDF is being drawn at the wrong resolution. Set the design to the head's dpi. A 203 dpi head wants a 203 dpi label.
