GK420d platen slipping

If the platen roller spins and the label does not move, Zebra says contaminants on the platen can make the media slip or stick. Clean the platen. If it still sticks or jams, replace it.

The platen is the roller that pulls the label. When it spins and the label does not move, the printer is not out of calibration yet. The roller is slipping.

Zebra's current platen page says contaminants on the platen can damage the printhead or cause the media to slip or stick. Adhesive, dirt, dust, and oils should come off the platen right away. If sticking or jamming continues after cleaning, you must replace the platen.

The model page is Zebra GK420d.

Clean or replace the platen#

The steps below are from the current platen page, which we read.

  1. Open the cover and the dispenser door. Remove the media from the platen area.
  2. Press the platen-release tabs on the left and right out, then rotate them up.
  3. Lift the platen out of the bottom frame.
  4. Clean from the center out with a fiber-free swab or a lint-free cloth, very lightly moistened with medical-grade alcohol. The current page says 99% pure. For heavy adhesive or a label jam, repeat with a new swab. The first pass can thin adhesive and oil without removing it. Discard the swab. Do not reuse it.
  5. Check that the bearings and the drive gear are on the shaft. Put the gear to the left, lower the platen into the frame, rotate the tabs back, and snap them in place.
  6. Let the printer dry for one minute before you close the dispenser door, close the media cover, or load labels.

Zebra's platen-roller page says a worn or damaged platen roller should be replaced or repaired immediately. That page did not open on October 27, 2026.

Which part#

The G-Series R2.0 spare-parts list, 980276-079 rev A, is the copy dated April 9, 2025 that we read. It applies when the 8th digit of the model code is 2. The GK420d code on that list looks like GK42-2X2XXX-XXX.

  • Direct-thermal platen: P1027135-039
  • Direct-thermal platen bearings: 105934-059

The GK420t row on the same list looks like GK42-1X2XXX-XXX. Its platen is P1027135-040 and its bearings are 105934-099. This page is the direct-thermal GK420d. Check the 8th digit before you order.

After it feeds again#

Calibrate the printer, then press FEED once. One press should feed one label. If it feeds two, or a blank label comes out between prints, use Zebra printer skipping labels. A worn platen can also leave print light on part of the label. That is blurry or faded labels, which is a different check from a roller that spins and moves nothing.
